Reinforced concrete is one of the most common building materials in the world. However, when subjected to weather and environmental attack, even the strongest structures, constructed using the highest quality concrete, need protection and sometimes repair in order to assure that the expected life of the structure is achieved.

Concrete was regarded as a low maintenance or maintenance-free material only a few decades ago. In reality, structures originally produced with an expected design life of 60, or even 120 years, quickly showed signs of degradation.
